David’s
picture hangs in the gallery of Hebrews 11, and is the kind of person
the bible refers to as one “of whom the world was not worthy”
(Heb11:38). But if you look at Hebrews 11, you’ll notice David’s name
is only mentioned in passing… but we’ll forgive the writer of Hebrews
for this. You see, David already has 66 chapters of the OT narrating
his story, providing the epic that is the life of David. That’s 38 more
than Abraham & Joseph put together, and that not even mentioning the
number of times he’s mentioned in the NT.
David
was a man of integrity, faithful in whatever he put his hand to. He was
a brave warrior and inspirational leader, be that of a small troop of
fighting men, or an entire nation, he modelled the way for those who’s
eyes were on him. He was a poet, a lyricist, responsible for more than
half of the psalms we have in our Bibles today… through them he touched
heaven, and heaven touched in return… such was his devotion to God.
He’s the only one in all of the Bible to be called, ‘a man after God’s
own heart.’ What a tribute! His passion was for God and for his
glory!
But
let’s not be misled here… David was no Mr Perfect! When we study him,
he’s no polished ideal… he’s got a rough edge, a humanness about him
that we can empathise with and understand. As we’ll see, David failed
at times and really got pretty depressed about the situations he found
himself in. He was a bad husband and a bad father at times, but that’s
what makes this story of David so brilliant – it’s earthed in reality
that we can touch and feel and be a part of… it’s a story we can see
ourselves in at so many different levels.
One
notable constant in the life of David, whether things were wonderful or
simply dreadful, God was at the centre of it all. David was someone
with an obvious devotion to God… he gave him his place, whether David
was dancing before the Ark of the Covenant, or even hiding in a cave,
David made sure God was there with him every step of the way! And God
honoured that!
And as
we peruse the life of David, let’s learn!!! Let’s ask ourselves, are we
men and women after God’s own heart? Have we got ourselves a moderate
zeal for God or are we a people who have a passion for his name? By the
end of this series, I hope we will be more passionate about God, more
passionate about getting to know Jesus, the one who had no shame in
being called the Son of David. May God grant that we may learn the same
devotion to him that David demonstrated.
